Paddy Killoran's Irish-American Serenaders: Paddy From "Paddy the Next Best Thing" (song)

This week's disc is a bit of a followup from the Paddy Killoran's Irish-American Serenaders one we posted a few weeks ago. This one is a vocal selection featuring tenor/saxophonist Jack Healy on "Paddy," a song featured in the 1933 film "Paddy the Next Best Thing." Starring Janet Gaynor, Warner Baxter and Walter Connolly, the film was one of Fox's biggest hits of the year. A couple other songs recorded by Killoran and Healy during this time were from popular Irish themed or set films as well.

Killoran's arrangement features a great piano solo and clarinet break. Although the exact personnel of the Serenaders isn't noted in Spottswood's discography, Killoran worked and recorded with pianists Jim Dwyer and Jim McGinn at the time, as well as fiddler/clarinetist/accordionist/violist/and goodness knows what-else-ist Paul Ryan.

Recorded in 1937 and released on the Decca label (12114). From the Ted McGraw Collection, McGraw 78 01-155.
