Tom Morrison and John Reynolds: Maggie in the Woods (polkas)
Here's another set of tunes from flutist Tom Morrison, joined again by Ed Geoghegan along with John Reynolds on tambourine (really a bodhran with jingles, likely hand struck). The first tune is sometimes known as The Granny in the Wood, followed by the well known polka, Maggie in the Woods. A ConorW on thesession.org writes of the first tune:
"Alex Sutherland (1874-1969) of Toome, Drumreilly, Co Leitrim transcribed this tune for his fiddle student Joseph McCabe around 1920. It is entitled "A Gallop" in the manuscript which may signal this was originally a light classical galop before it was assimilated into the Irish music tradition."
This 78rpm disc was recorded in 1928 and released on the Columbia label (33260-F). From the Ted McGraw Collection, McGraw 78 00-945.
