Joe Lynch: Did Santa Claus Come From Ireland (song)

Irish singer Joe Lynch recorded this song for the Glenside label (W-191) in the 1950s.

The Christmas themed song was written by John MacDonagh, a Tipperary born playwright, film director, writer, poet, singer, and song-writer who was also a member of the Irish Volunteers during the 1916 Easter Rising. His brother was Thomas MacDonaugh.

Dublin City Archives has a collection of MacDonagh's material, including correspondence based around the recording, licensing, and promotion of "Did Santa Claus Come From Ireland." Listed among these letters is an agreement assigning copyright of the song to Waltons' Music (who started the Glenside label).

Mary Carton recorded the song with Mickey Cartlon's Orchestra for Decca in 1950.

From the Irish Fest Collection, IF 78 01-589.
