John Glynn (b. 1916, Ballinlough, Co. Roscommon) founded the O’Carolan Minstrels in 1965. The Minstrels were a pre-Comhaltas school of music associated with the McNiff School of Irish Dancing. It taught over 100 students in the greater New York and New Jersey metropolitan area. Glynn was president of the Patsy Touhey Music Club in Queens, a branch of the Traditional Irish Musicians Association, and his daughter Maureen took over the school and renamed it for her father after his death in 1971. Many of the Glynn school’s students subsequently went on to compete at a high standard in the Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann.
